Analysts await launch of Apple's new iPod
|
With the launch of Apple's new iPod just hours away, market analysts and technology experts are eagerly awaiting the response to anticipated new features like a touch-sensitive screen and wireless connectivity.
Apple is expected to take its cue from the lauded iPhone, with a widescreen, which is viewed horizontally, as it seeks to corner the market for television and films on the move in the same way as it has captured music listeners.
Although video-playback capabilities are not a new iPod feature, the development will head off criticism that watching programmes and films on the device's small screen is unsatisfactory, particularly for lengthy periods of time.
The traditional clickwheel is also likely to be dispensed with in favour of an interactive screen on the "sixth generation" iPod, to be unveiled by Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, tonight.
The company last week announced that British users of its iTunes music store could purchase television shows and it is thought that providing a large-screen iPod with a big viewing area will drive the video-download market both in Europe and the US, where paid-for downloads have already been available through iTunes for over a year.
