About a year ago, my then six-month-old iPod Mini started having very serious battery problems. I was really surprised; iPods in general are very reliable, so why, after such a short period of time, was I having so much trouble?
All iPods are vulnerable to the same potential battery problems. iPods use lithium ion batteries, which have a very long shelf life when used properly. Apple's support page highlights a number of ways to get the most out of your battery, many of which seem pretty obvious; for example, we all know that it's just good common sense to use the hold switch to keep the iPod from turning itself on and then using up its battery running for hours inside a duffel or bookbag. The less obvious and very important advice buried within this support document, however, relates to file size, duration and formatting.
